Discussion Topic: Obama Picks New Jersey’s Jackson For EPA
That’s right, Lisa Jackson—as in the same Lisa Jackson who helped Gov. Jon Corzine put an end to bear hunting in the Garden State.

President-elect Barack Obama announced Monday that New Jersey's Lisa Jackson, a New Orleanian, will become the first African American to lead the Environmental Protection Agency under his administration.

BHO is running into some trouble with his appointments. He's managed to make everyone mad. Women, Gays and Far Lefties all feel like they've been left out. I guess hunters and fishers can feel the same. It's going to be an interesting four (or eight) years!

Being a hunter from NJ, I'm glad she is leaving. ;-)
I don't think the head of the EPA can really do much. What is she going to do, put black bears on the ESL? NJ is uniquely controlled by animal rights money. It has the only Sierra Club branch that is anti-hunting (all the rest see the necessity of at least hunting deer). She was all for killing coyotes. In other words, the bear policy in NJ makes no sense and it is hard to figure out if the politicians really believe in it. More likely, they accept millions of dollars from PETA and do what they want.
Obama doesn't need PETA's money. Jackson will, hopefully, spend her time advocating for brownfields, which is what I think she really cares about. But keep an eye on her.
Isn't Interior where the Federal Gov't regulates hunting?

As another NJer,
I'm not happy to see someone who took away a succesful bear hunt from NJ rise to a more powerful national position. However, like Pat said, its nice to see her leave here. Although, we still have Corzine to deal with, and since he is the one who will appoint her replacement, we will probably see another one with her mentality take her place.

Lisa Jackson is a bureaucrat. As already stated, she was taking orders from the governor who was getting support from the animal rights zealots who operate out of the urban northeastern part of the state. However, considering how liberal this new administration is going to be (where's the change Obama campaigned on? It looks like Clintonmania all over again) I would be concerned with anyone in a position of authority who is overseeing the use of our natural resources.

Of course Obama is running into trouble with appointments. He said he wouldn't appoint any lobbyists into a position in his adminstration. Typically a lobbyist is the person with the most skills for working an an adminstration it's just that they come with an agenda attached. No lobbyists in his adminstration means nobody else's agenda but it means he has to scrape the barrel for experienced people. It's a tough trade off and a gamble for progress.

Does anyone have a better biography of Ms Jackson. I would like to have a better understanding of her values before I commit to judgement. The loss of the NJ bear hunt was a shame but was it Ms. Jackson's doing or simply anti-hunting politics in the Corzine administration? Just asking.

CTB- lobbyists not only use money as political leverage over politicians but they also do the "you scratch my back and I scratch yours" by accepting positions in new adminstrations. A lobbyist is "kept around" as payment for previous services rendered such as campaign fundraising.
