Hotel Guest With Guns Sends Pelosi Packing

From the Denver Post :

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was briefly evacuated from her downtown Denver hotel on Saturday when a man carrying two hunting rifles and two pistols tried to check in to the hotel.

[Twenty-nine]-year-old Joseph Calanchini of Pinedale, Wyo., faces a charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon after police officers at the Grand Hyatt hotel noticed him carrying a rifle-type case while checking in. Calanchini did not have a concealed weapons permit. . . .

"I didn't even know the DNC was in town. I don't watch the news," Calanchini told the station from jail before he was released on $10,000 bond. "If I had known, I would have done things differently. It was a simple mistake."

Help! Educate me! He needed a Concealed Weapons Permit to carry a rifle in a case? What?

Wes

I shall join Brian in the ranks of The Bewildered Ignorant. Anyone from Denver out there?

Mike Diehl

Possibly the stupidest LEOs west of NYC.

Would they rather him carry an uncased rifle into the hotel and really cause a scene? How else could one transport a rifle other than in a case. Beside that I have seen a rifle case or two and I would like to meet someone who can carry one in a manner that could even be construed as concealed. Only if the hotel has a no firearms sign posted at the entrance should this be an issue.

I'm confused, and I live in the Denver area. How else is one supposed to transport rifles, or any firearms? really! Man, I guess maybe he was supposed to leave the guns in the car overnight, but Denver is a big city. I'd sleep in the truck before I took the risk, a high risk, of my guns getting swiped. I think that the DNC being in town must've changed things. I dunno. I've brought cased rifles into a hotel before, and not had a problem. And am I understanding correct that this ordeal cost this poor guy 10G?

Liberals are deathly afraid of guns and any civilian who has one, and will lie, cheat or do what ever it takes to ban them. Obama and his VP are two of the most radical anti- gun members of the Senate. If they win in November, We loose. Obama has stated before running for president, that he sees no need for a civilian to own a gun, any gun, so what does that do for hunters?
Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not." ~ Thomas Jefferson

I think they got him on the handguns. If you read the abstract closely it says he was carrying two pistols and two rifles.

I imagine the charge of not having a concealed weapons permit relates to the handguns.

I am not saying I agree, I am just pointing it out.

Bob

From what we know, this does sound ridiculous as a rifle in a case should not be considered a "concealed weapon". I would bet Gary is right though when he says it was the handguns, not the rifle.

For those of you blaming the democrats, do you really think the secret service's response would have been any different if it wash Bush or McCain staying in the hotel?

Brian T

Ah, I see it was in Denver. Clearly the altitude and lack of oxygen. That's the answer. Still, I look at my 2-gun hard case and think that it makes a fairly stupid lunchbox. It did occur to me that maybe they popped him on the handguns. So what should he have done? Tied them together with his shoelaces and hung them around his neck?

Brian T

On a related(?)issue, I heard that, in some jurisdictions of the lower 48, a rifle behind the seat of your truck is considered to be a concealed weapon. Hence the use of rear window rifle racks, despite the obstruction of your vision. Is this true, also?

shoot...only a matter of time before I lose my lifes savings doing something stupid

Guys,

Listen to what you are saying about the handguns. The guy wasn’t walking into the local pub looking for a beer… he was checking into a hotel. What if he was on a hunting trip? Are you not supposed to bring your handgun or firearm if you are on a hunting trip? Would this rule apply if he was going to the Denver airport to travel to BC on a hunting trip? I would think that the airport of all places would frown on him carrying a gun in the open when walking through the lobby!

Remember, we give them one they are going want to talk them all!

Hoka

Running dog politicians and ignorant liberals generally scare easily. How else did we get our president?

I stand by my second amendment rights bewildered by how messed up lawyers and politicians have made things.

I am a combat veteran who is proud to be an American and own the guns that I love.

Blue Ox

There would have been no problem & no story if that old bitch-hog had not been at the hotel.
SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED!!

Yeah, the issue has nothing to do with the Democrats, or for that matter so-called liberals. What it does have to do with is that the asylum has been turned over to the inmates! We so-called conservatives have allowed this to happen. We all profess to believe in law-enforcement, but would any of you want to fal into their clutches? I didn't think so! Cops have simply become the tools of the A-holes that now seem to have become dominant in the USA. The fact that many of us voted the current administration in, TWICE no less, demonstrates just how far we have fallen. What a fiasco! Tom

This is proof we need a Federal law that supercedes any State or Local law that allows for the carrying of any hunting pistol, shot gun or rifle. A permit that any officer can check out.

Brian

Back in Washington people's rights are regularly violated by being illegally arrested. The police get sued and lose but the crime of protest or whatever the authorities are trying to intimidate out of existance is held in check for the duration of a meeting or event.

If the guy can find a good lawyer he will prevail and walk away with money. I bet his guns will not be shootable if he gets them back.

James Stokes

I have been a gun owner and hunter for 30 years, they would have to kill me first to take away my guns. BUT with all the insane nut jobs out there, it makes sense not to allow guns in any form inside a Hotel or public area. Vote Republican and loose all your open hunting land, but hey you still have your automatic guns to shoot the public when you flip out.

Joe

Slowly and steadily we are slipping into the abyss that are the gun laws in the UK. Soon only the criminals wil own (sic) guns. The horror stories of gun owners whose mere wingshooting firearms are lost FOREVER are legion....google them

Stan

He was wrong but no big crime, he will learn to read nextime and know the gun laws.... city dwellers dont need guns..if they get muged its to late, for a gun. all the money we hunters pay at least they should let us have a booklet (Quick ref) for laymen version of the complex laws they created. They think we will stop at a local libray to read up on new laws, we are rgisterd so send us the BOOKlet. Fed has no problem with this...it was in a case locked and no bullets in pockets.?

stan

I wonder if the hotel desk clerk knows the gun laws...or the case that he carried with him was for. And this case politicaly will be

If guns cause crime, then pencils cause misspelled words. The mentality of "our" officials is tantamount to total stupidity. Hunter's unite, make sure you vote for those who support our life-style. The Supreme Court has decided that we, the citizens, have every right to own guns under the 2d Amendment. We must not lose our rights because of some ingrates. If they don't like guns, fine; but, don't take away my rights because of your dislikes. As a 32-year Veteran, I would have to fight tooth and nail to maintain this hard fought freedom and right.

charles slusser

well from the reading of the blogs above I can easily see why not one of them has a grip or a clue of what really happened...what is wrong in Denver, well there is the old saying "you can not fix stupid" I have traveled all over the country with guns ,and spent many nights in hotel rooms, not once have I ever run into this kind of crap... what has always worked for me is to leave the guns in the truck, and ask the clerk if there is a problem with keeping my guns in my room /no ammo.. I have never had a hotel turn me down...If they were to tell me that I could not protect my guns, I sure would have hauled myself out the door and started calling other hotels...Being the person I am I would file a law suit IF I were treated like this,$10,000 bond I don't think so, jail me and tell to the court. Denver is still in the USA they must have heard of the Bill of Rights/constitution.. (I am forgetting the old saying "CAN NOT FIX STUPID"
