Today’s Centre-Court Match: PETA Vs. Wimbledon

From Reuters via ESPN:

Wimbledon came under fire from animal activists on Tuesday for using marksmen to shoot down dive-bombing pigeons.

The tournament employs two hawks to scare away pigeons who had become a pest swooping down on Centre Court and distracting players in the middle of tense matches.

"But unfortunately there were one or two areas where the hawks didn't deter the pigeons, so it was deemed necessary to take a harder approach," [Wimbledon spokesman Johnny Perkins] explained. . . .

The decision to call in the marksmen was condemned as "cruel and illegal behavior" by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which complained to the tournament organizers and the police.

Ooh, now we're gonna have all of tennis on our side? Not much, but its better than a loss.

David Loeffler

Ever since they moved the range facilities from Wimbledon it's gone to heck.

Let me get this straight- it's okay to have a hawk tear a live pidgeon to pieces yet it's not alright to cleanly kill a pidgeon with a marksman? Typical. Perhaps they should just buy more hawks to appease everyone.

I would love to go into PETA's headquarters just to see if they use mouse traps.

I grew up in the same town as a PETA office. When they left the building for a larger one, the contractors had a terrible time with fleas, apparently the workers bring pets to the office with them and since fleas are an animal they dont believe in flea treatments for the pets, and the office became covered in the little blood suckers. (FYI a local radio station holds an annual fishing tourney in the waters next to their office and cap it off with a open pit pig picking in the park across the street!)

Tom Puckey

PETA is not an animal rights group. It only hides behind this reputation to promote their real agenda as vegitarians or,, more politically correct, vegans.

Haha i love it Tyler. Go radio station!

Thats just rediculous that they're making an issue out of this, but just as Evan said, now we have all of the tennis folks out against PETA too.

Don't forget:

"An enemy of an enemy is a friend"

As long as the pigeons are non native, kill them all, in a humane manner of course.

don m.

dont ya just love it.

Chris Carpenter

PETA would crap themselves if they came to SW Mo. They have nothing else to do than go haywire over some stupid pigeons. They can go right to hell.

Of all the unimportant things to fight against they chose this? Pathetic.

We should let the tennis palyers hit them with the tennis balls, first to 50 wins! Let's see some spikes!

Oh by the way I ment they should hit the PETA members...... Just shoot the birds.

Tom Puckey,
theres actually a differance between vegetarians and vegans. its not just a "political term".

Orland K

Two things, (one)I thought P.E.T.A stood for People Eating Tasty Animals. (Two)The enemy of my enemy is my friend(Tennis anyone?)
