Discussion Topic: Parents Claim Teacher Silenced Son On Hunting

From Vermont’s Rutland Herald:

Saying their son was "silenced" by his teacher for talking about hunting in the classroom, the parents of a fourth-grade student at North Bennington Graded School took their son out of school and have taken their case to the local school board.

 . . .

Jared Harrington's mother, Wendy Bordwell . . . said that, during snack time, Jared was discussing the recent spring turkey hunting season with a classmate when [Teacher Kathleen] Backus interrupted the conversation, insisting that there be no talk of "killing" in her classroom.

Somebody get that woman a clue-by-four. http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/C/clue-by-four.html

If the parents' allegations are true, the "teacher" is an abysmal dunce, not to mention a most poor role model, and should be dismissed.

jstreet

The teacher is a dork (that's for sure), but the parents seem to have overreacted by pulling their kid out of school 10 days early.

Whatever happened to common sense?

Jim

I never realy thought that hunting-talk was a right(nobody has ever infringed mine), but I am glad I noticed it is!

Ryan

Man, in NC, if you showed up to school the first day of deer season, you'd have substitutes for the whole day because the teachers were out in the field.

JT

Ryan, why do you think deer season opens on a Saturday?

Did any of you read some of the comments following the article. There is some scary weird people out there. My points are as follows based upon similar incidents that have been discussed here previously:
1. The school can establish (or has the right to set) parameters for what is acceptable I.E dress code, behavior, etc. The school however must establish a uniform policy beforehand so ALL the students have a clear understanding of what is expected of them. Making up policy on the fly is a no-no!
2. If talk about one particular student's hobby is prohibited, than in the interest of fairness, no students may discuss any of their hobbies.
Oh well, I'm getting tired and my brain is shutting down.

Trae B.

Id love it if a teacher got on to me about talking about hunting. Id try to get wrote up because id love to see that in the office.
principal: well son whadja do?
Me: Told my buddy about a buck I killed.
principal:...Really how big was it?

I'm thinking that a school that allows violation of our constitution (free speech) shouldn't receive federal or state funding.
Close it down!

Brian T

I wonder if the teacher ever considered how last night's chicken dinner got from the henhouse to the plate. Take the teacher hunting but mind your manners in school.

peter

what the hell. i didnt know they let LIBERAL IDIOTS TEACH PEOPLE.i am pisse. it is freedom of speech and a teacher shouldn't be aloud to exprress her personal opinions about anything. people should be aloud to talk about hunting in school,i do.

SilverArrow

Peter
Not only do you contradict yourself you also ought to spend less time talking about hunting (or what ever else you talk about in school) and more time paying attention to your lessons. You might even learn that we should all -- teachers included -- be allowed to speak our opinions aloud! Our great country was not founded by or for people who agreed with each other on everything. Respect and learn from teachers whether or not you agree with them or their philosophy!
The unfortunate lesson this particular teacher gave was that someone with more authority than you can squelch your opinion if you disagree with them. Our Constitution should be given more respect in the schools than that!

SilverArrow I found out that high school is pointless I got my ged this summer so im dropping out and starting collage a year early.

SilverArrow

Trae
I don't know what idiot suggested that strategy to you but that isn't worth the dynamite to blow it to hell! Finish High School with your clsss, walk up to the stage and get that real diploma! It really matters! Trust me!

Bob

Trae. B,
It's somewhat ironic that you are expressing the pointlessness of high school, but your posts are full of misspellings and grammatical errors.

Sort of undercuts your argument a little bit...

And for the other aspiring drop-outs that may be listening: A ged is far from equivalent to a high school diploma in the eyes of future employers.

Nicholas

I knew this had to happen evuentually. Im glad the parents acted on it. I wonder how any parents havent acted on things like this?

MPN

SilverArrow,
Well I think I can ditto everyone of your comments! You said it the best.

MPN

SilverArrow

Thank you for the compliment, MPN! I'd sure love to see Trae's collage! Probably a lot of hunting pictures in it! As for a college which would admit him early on a GED as a hiring manager I would not be impressed with their diploma!

Peter

Sliverarrow,
screw you SA. A TEACHER CAN'T EXPRESS THERE PERSONAL OPINIONS BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO MUCH INFLUENCE ON YOUNG MINDS, LIKE MINE.a teacher who says stuff like that can be forecing ideas and opinions into kids.and by the way i only talk about huning in lunch and during clubs. so in conclusion SCREW YOU SLIVERARROW
Peter

MPN

Well Peter,
If you were a teacher I'm sure your view would change real fast. The students are so free willed, do you think they actually care about their teachers opinions. SA is right.

MPN

MPN

Peter,
One more thing, if it is freedom of speech then the teacher can say her opinion! You contradict yourself.

MPN

peter

MPN
i admt i do kind of contridict myself but like i said a teacher has to much influence to speak her opinions. and not all kids are free willed especially young ones and older idiots.

Orland K

Ive only got two comments for that teacher. One)Freedom of speech is nice huh?(just remember people(men/women) have "killed" to give you that right, and those "boys" also have that right.(Two)If you don't like the "rules" here in the U.S. I hear they need teachers in Iran.
