Three Bowhunters Attacked; One Grizzly Dead

This past weekend, three bowhunter chasing elk in Montana were attacked by grizzly bears in two separate incidents. On Saturday, a sow with three cubs charged college student Roman Morris, leaving non-life-threatening puncture wounds to his leg and shoulder. On Sunday, another sow with one cub attacked a pair of bowhunters, who hit the bear first with pepper spray, then with two slugs from a .44 mag., killing it in self defense. Read the report here.

Maybe its time for some controlled hunting? That seems to lower the problem bear in places. This is a pretty general statement. Weigh in with me.

Bubba

Where is Capstick and his .470 Evans dbl when you need him!
At this point in the grizzly's career, getting a controlled hunt passed would be mind boggling!
Anybody out there got any scientific info on concentration compared to carrying capacity?
To me it kinda sounds like hunting in Africa, keep your eyes open and be prepared for the unexpected!

Bubba

Greg

Im a Capstick fan also, have the video collection and some of his books. Chances of any hunt is slim to none but it makes sense. Oh hell Im talkin about the government. Sense, government, oxyMORONic isnt it?

Ralph the Rifleman

No way, not a chance, uh-uh, is there ever going to be a Grizzly hunt in Montana in our life time.
Just my opinion.

Blue Ox

Wasn't there a posting a while back about whether or not bowhunters shoud carry pistols? I think this news story speaks for itself.

Bubba

Hey G!

Like Capstick, huh?!

I'm not sure a hunt is the answer! Once again, without the hard evidence as to "concentration versus carrying capacity versus viable population"! Of course there is a common sense approach, DON'T GO OUT THERE!!!
Hey! Here's another angle, only three grizzly attacks out of how many hunters? What are your odds!?

Bubba

Tommy

Sometimes we go into the woods to hunt - and we become the hunted - very, very rare. I agree with Bubba. We shouldn't rush to hunt something just because a few people get attacked. Especially after the work that has been done to re-establish the grizzly.

Thats the type of fear and hysteria that got that gorgeous creature so close to being wiped from our country's borders in the first place.

Greg

Arent these bears somewhat used to being around people? If so they no longer see humans as a threat and react as such. Game officials removing problem bears i.e. killing does not serve the hunting public's interest. Would'nt a limited lotto hunt pour money into the local economy? Also this would dehumanize the bears and once again make us top of the food chain not part of it. Maybe Im nuts but it makes sense to me. I have read the "Peter Hathaway Capstick" books I have many times over, the video collection also. We lost a great author, conservationist, and to me, an entertainer with his passing, 1998 I think, at a much too early age 57?
Peter Hathaway Capstick

Matt Mallery

Capstick made me dream of Africa and dangerous game. It is a dream I have yet to fulfill, but I'm saving my pennys and one day......

He was/is one of the few authors that make if very difficult to put down his books once one has been picked up. As if they have glue on them. I think I have read six or seven. The African Adventurers (I believe that's the title) was my favorite.

Capstick gone!? I wasn't aware!
There is a void that will never be filled!

Bubba

Greg

Bubba, Capstick has a video called "Peter Capstick's Last Safari" wonderful and a bit heart wrenching to know that he is no longer with us. He would want to hunt the bears with a blowgun or pocket knife. Really I think he liked big double rifles. Funny how we can get off the subject. Ok with me when it gets to heated huh?

I wasn't aware that he was gone! (sniffle) I have spent many sleepless nights with "Death in the Long Grass." I suppose my favorite is "Death in the Silent Places". I have one of his videos where he is hunting with Gordon Cundill.

It's okay that we disagree. It's okay to be upset because someone doesn't seem to understand what you're trying to say. We all have different ideas. But when it comes down to the nitty-gritty. I want a dyed-in-the-wool, red-blooded, Second Amendment backing, deer killing, dog loving, gun toteing, outdoor loving, fire building American that may not own, but can appreciate a master built, custom rifle. AND someone I can argue the merits of a .243 Win. compared to a 6mm Rem., with neither winning or losing!
Many of the guys blogging here, I think, would do to sit around a campfire with!!

Bubba

Well, maybe except for Herteau!
Tectonic plates! Humph!!

Don't he no Bubba's ain't edikated!?

Red China goes best on a yeller table cloth!!

Bubba

Okay, okay.... HURteau!!

(I thought I was wrong wun time, but I was mistooken!)

Bubba

I must admit my shame!
I am a real Capstick "nut". He's been gone more than 10 years and I wasn't even aware of it!
According to the computer data, he went the the "Great Hunting Grounds" in 1996!
I don't think he would dare tackle a griz' without Silent along to track!

Bubba

Greg

Silent would be something for the bear to chew one while Peter loaded his .470 nitro express magnum or to get his knife to stab it in the jugular!! I think cabelas has his video collection. The one I have has, lion, white rhino, elephant, cape buffalo Botswana safari and Last safari. I have them on vhs and they are almost completely worn out. I will find them on dvd when that happens. So many sleepless nights with him I feel like he is a friend. How about Bubba, Matt, Myself and Tommy, for excitement, around that fire. Of course lions roaring, hyenas laughing, hippos grunting and the raspy call of a lonely male leopard in the background over a tumbler of Famous Grouse with one cube of ice. Im in heaven. Thats it!!! Im sellin the house, kids, bike, 4wheeler, truck, my blood whatever! Im going to the Romantic Africa I read about. Dont care if I come back. What more noble way to die by being stomped to a pulpy consistency by a Cape buffalo, NOT!!!!

Tommy

Hey Greg,

Thank you for graciously including me on your hunt there! Sounds like fun. I will just leave the carnivores to you guys though. Hunting them seems like hunting fellow hunters to me. Not my thing. I will take the herbivores though - the tasty ones anyway! You guys can battle the toothy critters.

Later

Bubba

I like that Greg. Just don't expect me to do any running!!! Damn hip!!!
Maybe instead of .243 vs. 6mm, we could argue .470 vs. .458!!
Excuse me while I go pound a "FOR SALE" sign into my front yard!!!

Bubba

Greg

Bubba you take the 470 ill take the 458, got a metal knee. No runnin for me either!!!!

Bubba

Catch you guys tonight!
Wife just left for work and I've got two days to hunt, but gotta work with bow first!
Missed a huge(!) double bearded tom at an extended range. Think it was 10-12 yards, somethin' like that! (I was ready to cry!)
First time in a blind with 'shoot-thru' mesh!

Bubba

Bubba

Hey Greg

Think Tommy would make good leopard bait!?
If we missed the cat, maybe he could talk it into a compromise!!

Bubba

Tommy

Oh Bubba,

I'll help you with your alfalfa; but the bait thing; that's where I draw the line.

Brent

I'm in Wyoming and we can't carry when bow hunting. I'm not familliar with Montana is it legal there to carry during bow season. You will get fined here in Wyoming for carrying when bow hunting. My family and I have stopped bow hunting in the Dubois area wich is near the Yellowstone Park because of the bears. I say let us carry.
