Idaho Paddlers Witness Suicide, Retrieve Body, Get Fined

Also from the AP and FoxNews.com:

Canoeist Dennis Bohrn and his companions were stunned when they saw a woman jump off the Perrine Bridge, her body landing near them in the Snake River. Many in the group were crying by the time they managed to reach the woman and paddle her body to shore.

So Bohrn was shocked when an officer walked up and instead of thanking or comforting the group last Sunday, wrote out a couple of $85 tickets for failing to have life jackets on board either of the two canoes.

Seem fair to you?

You have got to be kidding me. If you were the officer on the scene and you had distraught canoeists and a dead body(suicide), do you really think you'd be looking to see if there were any lifejackets in the canoe??? That officer needs to get his priorities straight.

Kristine Shreve

No, seems stupid to me. This is why many people are now reluctant to help others. They can't be sure they won't be penalized by some idiot law.

TDHoward

Seems to be the motto of current law enforcement, "let no good deed go unpunished!"

Matt

I try so hard to give cops the benefit of the doubt. That most are good people and are on the side of the honest, law abiding tax payers, and yet ever since I was in college, I have seen cops abuse their power and act like jerks.

Floyd Smith

Why did they not have LIFE Jackets on or at least in the canoe?? Way to go Officer!! Keep up the good work!! PS I'll bet they did not have a fishing license either.

James

I agree that the first thing the officer should have been doing was looking for life jackets, but people do need to abide by all laws so that they have a SAFE expierience while boating

Lee B.

BS!!!! Give me a break.
I'll be sure to take my time getting my life jacket on before i run out to save one of you floating down stream.
What a jerk.

Lee B.

The cop that is

Paul

A classic case of the LAW gone awry! The utmost abuse of power. Evidentially this officer never heard of using discretion??

Aaron Pape

that cop is an idiot. he has to go and make a delicate situation even worse than it already is. he needs to think about what he's really doing.

willyd

That officer is definitely a jerk!I'd like to wave to him as he is floating down a river and say that I would rescue him but, dam, can't find my life preserver!

Morgan

How is this abuse of power? If someone is in a car wreck and is at fault, they don't deserve to have their negligence go aside because it was a bad incident. Not that the circumstance is the same, but regardless of suicide, they were breaking the law, and a LE officer has a job to do.

William

Shouldn't the officer have been performing CPR instead of demonizing good samaritins?

da man

the officer should pay them 85 bucks.

as moeggs

I tell ya, it's a tough job trying to train someone to become a cop, but having to teach the new cop common sense on top of all of the other training makes it even more difficult. Common sense 101 here.

Matt

We'd be blamming the cop if the people in the canoe drowned and he let them off with a warning. I agree with Matt, they probably didn't have fishing licenses either.

Bombman

That Matt dude is dumb! They shouldnt have gotten a ticket after just pulling someone out of the water. I Love what Aaron said!

Walt smith

The cop wanted to ticket somebody and the suicide gal was dead so whats a cop to?? ticket the next closest person to the scene of the crime right! that way he gets to feel like he's doing something meaningfull and important. He was proably pissed that they pulled the body out so he couldn't get on the night time news.
