Discussion Topic: Are Heat-Packing Seniors Safer?

From the Houston Chronicle:
Karl Virtue never gave much thought to owning a gun until after he reached Social Security age.
But a year ago, after a tussle with a man he caught stealing from a neighborhood construction site, the 70-year-old figured it might not be a bad idea.
Now he's a card-carrying concealed handgun license holder. And, as a senior citizen, he represents one of the most likely age groups to take advantage of the 1995 Texas law allowing law-abiding residents to carry guns.
There's good reason, Virtue said.
"When I was younger I never had to worry, because nobody was going to go out of their way to give me a hard time," said Virtue, a retired fundraising consultant. "But when you get old, you feel you've lost your mojo. You feel more vulnerable . . . ."
Virtue bought a 9 mm handgun . . . .
He hasn't started carrying the gun, but if the need ever arises, he said he'll be ready.
"The old geezers in Texas," he said, "are well-armed."

So, do you want the “old geezers” in your town to be “armed”? Will (or do) you carry as a senior citizen?

THIS IS A GREAT THING. I BELIVE THAT THIS LAW HERE IN MISSOURI WAS PASSED FOR TWO REASONS, ONE-SO THAT LAW ABIDING CITIZENS MAY CARRY A FIREARM FOR PROTECTION, AND TWO- SO THAT IT MAY SCARE MORE CRIMINALS INTO NOT WANTING TO MUG, STEAL, OR RAPE. OUR ELDERS I BELIEVE NEED IT MORE THAN OTHERS, THEY CAN NOT GO TOE-TO-TOE WITH MUGGERS, BUT A 9MM CAN. AS I SAID THEY NEED IT MORE, AND ARE MORE APT TO ONLY USE IT IN THE CORRECT SITTUATIONS!! I WILL FOREVER CARRY A GUN, ECSPECIALY IN MY LATER YEARS.

I think the older you are generally the more fit you are to carry a gun. As Mr. Virtue said when you get old you lose your mojo well with that loss usually comes more thoughtfulness. I feel very strongly that law abiding citizens should be allowed to carry guns. However, I do worry about the few times when a normally good person gets drunk, or frightened or something happens to make them act in an unusual way and the gun is easily accessible.

I think concealed carry is a good idea for seniors as long as they are trained. Everyone carrying a handgun should be trained and be fully aware of the legal consequences of using a handgun to protect ones self or others. Maybe the criminals will think tiwce about robbing older people.

Well why not? The second ammendnent has no age restrictions. Everyone should be able to protect themselves.

Seniors are being talked about as if they are some sort of minority.
Are we forgetting that they are mostly responsible for the freedoms we have today? What scares me is that the government can't keep the firearms from the criminals, but we can have a disscusion on whether law abiding citizens should be able to conceal a gun. Just be glad you are not under communist rule like Illinois and have the "Piece of Mind" and CHOICE of how to protect yourself.

And if you can read in english thank a marine. My "mojo" has a laser sight. In Mich. it's a no-no to carry and be under the influence by the way.
