Discussion Topic: Should Teachers Carry Guns in School?

From this story in the St. Paul Pioneer Press: "In the wake of school shootings in Wisconsin, Colorado and Pennsylvania during the last two weeks, a state legislator says he plans to introduce legislation that would allow teachers, principals, administrators and other school personnel to carry concealed weapons."

Good idea? Bad idea? What do you think? Let us know by posting your comments below.

I agree with the consealed carry part of it. Pulling a gun in a room where other people are armed would be suicide for the gunman, and therefore, nobody in thier right mind would do it, and if they did, they would be killed.

And the part about a football team charging a gunman, i agree with that, but up to a point. If the dude is heavily armed with something like a .223 bushmaster with a 30 round clip, and multiple clips, he can take a whole classroom of students easily in a short amount of time. And what if the guy is, god forbid, straped with bombs, you know, something like a terrorist attack? Tell me how else they are going to take the terrorists down with little to no civilian fatalities, besides a staff member with a gun. You just cant do it.

Any change of mind on this issue after Virginia Tech??

Lots of interest on talk radio concerning teachers/professors being allowed to carry guns on school grounds and in class. What say you?
The talk today was specifically "guns" that might be a bit over the top, but why not allow them to carry tasers, chemical agents, or other non-lethal defense items? Makes sense to me!

I am appalled by the suggestion, idea and possible action that a teacher or any administrator carry a gun on or at any school property. As a parent I would never allow a gun in my home due to the possible and potential misuse of a firearm. Think of the accidents that have happened with guns not to mention lawsuits that would come if teachers were to carry guns to school.

This idea promotes violence and is idiotic. If a teacher has a domestic violence issue then other measures can be put in place to protect her/him. If a student has a domestic violence issue the same is true. Metal detectors, plans of action, cell phones, security, security cameras, etc., etc. can be used to protect the individual and others on campus.

The suggestion of legistlation to allow teachers or anyone to have guns in school needs to be brought to a public vote if ever considered. It is not an issue our legistlation should control. It involves our countries children and only parents and all American citizens should have a say in this significant, life altering matter.

I just heard of this issue this morning, Sept. 12, 2007 and I am outragged. No way should this notion ever be entertained. What is anyone thinking. If someone has a history of someone violently abusing them and that person is a school employee well that person I am sorry for but they are responsible to care for and educate our students and not potentially place others children in harms way.

Before 1995, when licenced teachers could carry concealed firearms in the classroom, there was never a case of either a licenced teacher shooting students or a student aquiring a teacher's firearm.
