Fish in a Barrel: Study says nearly half of all fish eaten are now farmed

I’m not sure we ever want to totally separate fishing for food and fishing for recreation, but the boom in aquaculture does promise to conserve greater numbers of wild fish, which is an obvious benefit to sport anglers. Already in the last few decades, the fish-farming industry has grown by leaps and bounds. According to the latest study, 43 percent of the fish consumed by humans now come from aquaculture, compared to just 9 percent in 1980. That’s 45.5 million tons of farmed fish, worth $63 billion, eaten each year, according to this press release from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. click here for story
