Petzal on Palin: Who Thought McCain was That Smart?

Governor Palin is almost too good to be true. She is a lifelong hunter, a Life Member of the NRA, a dedicated jock, mother of a soldier who will be deployed to Iraq next month, a person who actually knows something about oil exploration, and perhaps most important, an Alaska Republican who is serious about honesty in public office. The odds on finding one of these are about the same as finding an honest Democratic politician from New Jersey. Her only drawback seems to be her background in journalism, but then no one is perfect.

I know very few people, including Repubicans, who are enthusiastic about John McCain. He seems to be tolerated only as an alternative to Obama*, who is intolerable to gun owners. There I was, prepared to hold back my rising gorge and vote for Old John M. and whatever lame hack he selected as Veep, and here he comes up with someone that I can actually be enthusiastic about from any number of standpoints, never mind guns and hunting. I wish Senator McCain and Governor Palin all success.

*About last night’s speech: I didn’t watch it. I have been leery of speeches since I watched John F. Kennedy’s inaugural in January 1961, when he promised that we would pay any cost, bear any burden, and oppose any foe in the defense of freedom. What we got was Vietnam.  The only truly prophetic part of the Inaugural was when the lectern caught on fire; there was a sign if ever there was one. Speeches are theatre, nothing more. Perhaps the only honest one in history was Lincoln’s Second Inaugural, in which he said, essentially, “You wanted a war and you got it. How do you like it?”

I was hoping McCain would choose Palin or Jindahl from Louisiana, but had no expectation of either. Imagine my delight today!

No, she doesn't have a lot of experience, but then Bill Clinton didn't either--Gov. of Arkansas.

I heard on FOX today that Palin's favorite food dish is moose stew. You have to love it! This, the pro-life stance, the NRA life membership, the pro-drilling sentiment Palin holds--it all must be driving big city liberals crazy!

i got to experience palin's leadership firsthand in alaska and she in talented, tenacious, likeable and a natural leader. she went up against the good ole boy, cowboy types that wanted to push her around and try to scare her during the campaign. guess what, they got thrown out on their a**es. she really did clean things up in a state that had always been run by the oil industry. she questioned everything and did an awsome job with the budget getting it back in line. she cares about the people that put her in office and always puts them first. don't think she is a pushover. that got a lot of tough guys bitten in the butt! watch what she brings to the ticket. she will be good for this country. i remembered telling people when she first became governer that she would probably be president some day. it couldn't get any better than that!

james ti

by the way: the hellar decision will last about as long as the next presidency when a couple of liberal judges get appointed.

Dick Mcplenty

She's nothing but an attempt to get votes from the billary crowd who aren't convinced that under cover brother should be president. She brings a liberal image to the republicans, that some fat balding republican douche bag thats been in politics so long that they've lost reality could never do as VP

Add to this the fact that alaskas number one industry is OIL,its no secret why mccain picked her.I hope she works because the country can't handle undercover brotha and what his agenda really is.

I’ve been cussed, discussed, dismissed, denounced, decried, despised, disdained, and acclaimed on this blog.

Some of you guys are about as sharp as marbles.

This election is all about the Supreme Court….Not the Economy. Not Iraq. Not Oil. Not Rowe-Wade, Not Heller….well, yes, it is Heller. The next Prez is going to shape the SCOUS for the next 50-years. I don’t know how to state this more strongly.

McCain will be one-term President. He’s much better that any Democrat running on the field in reference to SCOUS.

You best get the guy in office. You best groom a person to run for President in 2012 against Hillary. This Sara Paline is the best deal going.

McCain put some thought into this choice, Folks.

Mike Reeder

Those of you who like Palin will like this even more.

Associated Press - August 29, 2008 1:33 PM ET

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - The father of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin says he's been left "speechless" by the announcement that his daughter is John McCain's running mate.

Chuck and Sally Heath got a call from Palin's husband, Todd, yesterday as they were driving to a remote camp in Alaska to hunt caribou. Todd Palin told them to make sure they listen to the radio news because the camp is out of cell phone range.

When they couldn't reach the hunting camp because of a flooded creek, they headed home.

Early this morning a friend called to tell them the buzz was that Palin was McCain's likely pick.

Heath says he tried various phone numbers, but couldn't reach his daughter.

The announcement has proven amusing to Heath. After dealing with constant phone calls, he says he'd "rather go moose hunting than be involved with politics."

I do agree with the comments aobut SCOTUS appointments. It's one thing a president can do that has true long lasting results on the state of the union.

As far as Paline goes. I saw a bit about her on Nightline tonight and a couple of blurbs on the news. She seems to be a good choice to bring women on board the republican ticket, please the pro-lifers and appease gun owners.

Will it be enough? Time will tell.

Would have included this on the previous post, but just got it from my daughter. Better than a thousand words...

Hahaha

I love to hunt & fish & I love guns.

But.................

GO BARRACK OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!

OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!!!!!

The republican party gets everything it deserves. I voted for McCain in 2000 but you all voted for W because he was a born again christian. Whatever the hell that means.

The Bushs H & W are both DISASTERS. H opened the door for Clinton to get elected & W opened the door wide open for Obama to get elected. Republicans get what they deserve & we as sportsman don't hold the lobbyists & free wheeling spenders & corrupt corporate elite accountable. The current replican party isn't the party of Reagan.

BTW picking the gov from Alaska is a bad joke. Most women across the nation will see it as a manipulative move just to get elected.

Del in KS

Gov Palin is a very impressive lady. I agree with you Dave. Feel much better about voting for McCain. We can't afford four years of 'Bama in the WH with a Dem congress. "Undercover Brotha" was a funny movie nothing funny about 'Bama.

DAVE2

RIGHT ON DAVE, WE NOW HAVE SOMETHING TO VOTE FOR.
TO HAHAHA, I UNDERSTAND YOUR PAIN. IT MAKES ME SICK TO SEE WHAT IS GOING ON IN WASHINGTON AND THIS FINE LADY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CHANGE MUCH. HOWEVER, I WILL TAKE A GOOD ONE AND PRAY THAT SHE DOES NOT GET SUCKED INTO WASHINGTON. OBAMA IS AS FAR LEFT AS ANYONE CAN GO AND HOPEFULLY YOU WILL SEE THAT BEFORE ELECTION.
---------DID ANYONE HEAR THINGS BREAKING AND BEING THROWN IN NEW YORK?

Eric

Can't wait to see her kick Biden's ass!!

YOT

Contiguous to Mr. Allworthy’s estate was the manor of one of those gentlemen who are called preservers of the game. This species of men, from the great severity with which they revenge the death of a hare or a partridge, might be thought to cultivate the same superstition with the Bannians in India, many of whom, we are told, dedicate their whole lives to the preservation and protection of certain animals, was it not that our English Bannians, while they preserve them from other enemies, will most unmercifully slaughter whole horse-loads themselves, so that they stand clearly acquitted of any such heathenish superstition.

semp

Rove methinks ... Karl Christian Rove ... back in the game baby!

semp

Yo Yot ... what are you babbling about? Dial the wrong number ?

I think Palin is a good choice for a running mate; but I think most voters will view her for what McCain wants her for;a simple gamble to win female votes. I hope it works.
What Gun Nut wouldn't like her? Raised on camp fires and buck hanging poles. She hunts, fishes, and not a bad looking lady, either.
Either way, I think we have reached a point of certain compliance for politicians. Enough talk about what you promise to do just get in office and DO IT!

Buck

To use some of Obama's own kind of language back at him. When it comes to hunting, guns... "He just doesn't get it!"

I like this choice. Where was she in the primary for Prez the first time around? I would like her for President.

I think that she is a joke as VP and McCain will loose because of it. He is 72 and she would be one heart beat from becoming President. (McCain had 4 incidents of skin cancer). She is probably a nice lady and hunter but I can't vote on this ticket because we are not electing president of Safari Club International.

jack

I think it is a brilliant choice and so does a popular radioman who put it succinctly (and bluntly):

Guns.
Babies.
Jesus.

Palin loves everything to which the Democratic Party platform is most hostile.

jack

Frankie -

Nobody votes a ticket based on the VP. Did you vote for Gore because he had Lieberman on the ticket?

As for McCain's health, his mother is still alive and has campaigned with him. That's a good enough health history for me.

Simone de Beauvoire

Never play cards with any man named “Doc.” Never eat at any place called “Mom’s.” And never, never, no matter what else you do in your whole life, never sleep with anyone whose troubles are worse than your own.

Hunting Nut

I just spoke with my sister & she said she feels insulted by the pick.

People are also touting that Palin is pro life. Wait until the media informs the public she is anti choice even if a woman gets raped or its a case of abusive incest. That's going to go over real well with women who voted for Hillary.

KJ

"One heartbeat from the Presidency." Franklin Roosevelt was a very popular president with a virtually unknown VP named Harry Truman. Roosevelt picked him because he could garner some midwestern votes, but beyond that Truman was a virtual unknown, unproven in Washington. Then Roosevelt died, and with the weight of the world on Truman's shoulders, he stepped up and led the country. This woman has a lot more moxy about her than Biden, is unafraid to stand up to her own party when she feels she must (something Biden and Obama are afraid of doing), and just might make an excellent president. Yes, she's one heartbeat from the Presidency. So is Biden, if elected. And I don't want him in the White House.

Bernie Kuntz

KJ: I couldn'have said it better than you did.

Each of you, ask yourself how many jobs you have held where you developed new skills and talents to either meet the requirements of the job, or expand the function of the position to make it more effective. The presidential and V.P. "jobs" are no different, as long as the candidates have the moxy. And I think McCain and Palin have that and more.
