Final Word on the Best Western Debate

The results for our best Western were more chaotic than our contest to pick the best award for political dissembling; that was the Distinguished Lying Cross as you may recall. So, in my role as ultimate arbiter of taste and culture, I will now take a dally around the pommel, lean back in the saddle, and settle this here argument.

Best Western: Unforgiven
In a league by itself.

Almost Best: The Searchers
Done in by historical inaccuracies, but  a masterpiece nonetheless.

Honorable Mention: High Noon
Brought down by silly gunfight, but has best song. Grace Kelly is the best-looking newlywed ever to shoot a bad guy through a pane of glass.

Honorable Mention: Shane
Raised high by the unforgettable Jack Palance, marred by Alan Ladd's spotless buckskin outfit.

Honorable Mention: The Gunfighter
Great Gregory Peck, and way ahead of its time.

Honorable Mention: Tombstone
What Jack Palance did for Shane, Val Kilmer does for this one. The gunfighting has a fair amount of b.s. in it, but is saved by "You're a daisy if you do."

Honorable Mention: Ulzana's Raid
Bert Lancaster at his best. Great script, and some very disturbing questions raised.

Worst Movie from a Great Book: The Shootist
John Wayne deserved better for his last picture. The book, by Glendon Swarthout, is possibly the best Western novel ever written. Read it, then see the movie, and you'll see what I mean.

Western that Ruins All Other Westerns: Blazing Saddles
Mel Brooks couldn't make it today.

Forced by a requirement to take an arts course in college, I signed up for "The Western Film."
The professor encouraged bringing beer to the evening screenings to facilitate discussion. The most memorable scene was when Gary Cooper, while on horseback and holding the reigns with his other hand, pulled out a cloth pouch of tobacco, untied it with his teeth, and hand-rolled a cigarette single handedly, all while still riding. After he knotted closed the pouch again, the entire class erupted in applause. I think it was in "High Noon" but I'm not sure. I then learned to do the same while driving a car, but have since quit tobacco out of self-preservation.

Rob

Once Upon A Time In The West? Are you kidding me? That movie sucked! The Wild Bunch didn't get the credit it deserves here. Have any of you seen a movie called The Long Riders which came out in 1980-81? It is really underated in my opinion. I'll agree with Unforgiven as the number one though.

ShoeMe2

Dave,
Great choices, but I was a bit surprised 2 of my most favorite Westerns (True Grit and Lonesome Dove) didn't make even honorable mention

Interesting forum...keep up the good work.

shootreadyaim

"Evil Roy Slade" (movie made for TV) deserves some mention on this site. Especially when Slade (John Astin) is made to give up his weapons. He piles and piles them up (including one bomb) and then can't manage to walk even a few steps without them for balance.

RLRiggins

I guess I do not understand the criteria for "best" western because for once I disagree with Dave on all choices. While I often find myself in agreement with him on most things these picks amaze me. By the way could there be a bigger wuss gunfighter than Alan Ladd?
I do enjoy the forum though regardless.

Dave Petzal

I was appalled to see that I had omitted The Wild Bunch from the list. I think it ranks right next to The Searchers, and is kept out of first place only by some really dopey dialog. I apologize to all concerned.

Alan Ladd was only 5'5" or something like that, but then so was Audie Murphy, and he was the Real Deal.

Dave Petzal

To Steve Ferber: I think it's time for your drooling and stumbling class.

Carney

Dave Petzal:

I'm taking my marbles and going home.

Walt Smith

Oh my goodness, how could you leave out Josey Wales and Young Guns. Not to mention True Grit and Big Jake?????????

Dick Mcplenty

I'm sure the two brotha's were just testing out the homes security system. All items would have been returned to a pawn shop.

RLRiggins

Dave I agree Audie Murphy was the real deal and then some. Size has never been a factor of tough. I always just felt that Alan Ladd looked like and acted like a wuss. I may be wrong and he may have been the toughest man that ever lived but movies are after all based on perception.
Oh by the way my Vote was for Lonesome Dove for "Best" authentic western

Mike Diehl

I second the call for some executive moderation of the blog, Dave. Whomever the troll is, it surely is not representative of the hunting or shooting community.

NH Philosopher

Dave - please strike the string related to Troy Yaster. This diatribe is embarrassing and is not representative of the Field & Stream Community, not to mention the sporting community.

Frankly the post made by Mr. Troy Yaster is more than insulting and if it is not stricken from this blog I may have to reconsider the loyal subscription to F&S I've had since I was 10 years old.

Intolerable hatred is not the pathway to enlightenment or sound debate. It fuels a fire not needed in our community - particularly since we are struggling to maintain access to private/public land to hunt and fish. His post - while completely out of context and poorly written - will fuel a debate F&S does not need, particularly with the EOP changing hands this year.

I, as well as many blog readers/subscribers, kindly request that you and/or the F&S editorial staff to remove this post from the blog post haste.

Not only does this post have the potential to steer advertisers away from the publication and sister site - it also has the potential to blow up in the mainstream media.

Best,
NH Philosopher

Ben

Admin - you want to take down Troy's post?

Troy - you want to shut up?

Does Quigley Down Under get consideration as a western? Certainly the gun is memorable, music fits (magnificent 7ish) the genre. Finally, the acting is, for the most part, good.

Personaly, I'd go with Back to the Future 3 as my favorite western. When Marty McFly introduces himself as Clint Eastwood, well....they just don't make movies like that anymore.

Duck Creek Dick

Dave:
I took your advice and just finished reading "The Shootist". I found it to be an excellent book but not a great book. The movie version better reflected reality. Gillum's behavior in the book, going from hero worship to instant hatred of J.B. Books was a stretch. The book critics like that Oedipal psychological stuff I guess.
Swarthout should know that Remington never made a double-action .44 revolver, ever.
You're right though. We should read the book and see the movie. Good call.

Hmmm? I just don't see the fascination in Unforgiven, I must be missing something, I'm a big Eastwood fan.

Anything from Leone, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Wild Bunch, Major Dundee, Man Who Shot Libery Valance, Rio Bravo, El Dorado...Fort Apache, the Alamo (original), Culpepper Cattle Co., McCabe and Mrs Miller, Little Big Man, Soldier Blue.....High Plains Drifter or Josey Wales, you need to see more films.

JohnR

Don't forget "Lonesome Dove" Larry McMurtry wrote some awesome westerns that were made into movies.
I still like Blazing Saddles!

Open Range was good too!

DAVE2

LITTLE LATE JUMPING IN HERE. NO MENTION OF THE BOB HOPE WESTERNS.

O Garcia

Military History magazine in its compilation of 100 greatest war movies of all time also included "Ulzana's Raid" and "The Searchers". These movies also do well in that genre, apparently.

Although I voted for Tombstone, I also like Eastwood's Unforgiven, but we were asked to vote for only one movie.

Now that we're on the topic of Clint Eastwood, isn't he the most underrated director of all time? He has more than 20 movies, has two Oscars, he even musical scores his own movies (he's a jazz fan, although not the Utah Jazz variety). And makes really good movies.

But ask any Hollywood writer for a list of great, or visionary, or influential directors and he would instinctively put down Hitchcock, Wilder, Wyler, Spielberg, Coppola, Scorcese, Kubrick, Bergman, Kurosawa, and GOD FORBID, George Lucas, but not Clint Eastwood. Maybe Hollywood is just more comfortable with Clint being this cool old actor with leathery skin. :)

bigchota

This is a good list for us old timers to review.
The 500 Plus - a Western Lover's Listing
This is intended to be a comprehensive list of all Western movies even remotely worth seeing from the past 100 years, interesting, entertaining or in some way provocative or memorable. The Internet Data Base (INDb.com) lists 6,700 Westerns. Well, that's a bit much, so we settled on the more digestible number of a bit over 500, right now exactly 523. For someone, who loves the genre, these are all fairly enjoyable. I've seen 90-95% of them; the rest are based on others' recommendations.

No formula series Westerns are included, thus nothing of Tom Mix, Buck Jones, Tim McCoy, 30s John Wayne, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Rex Allen, Charles Starrett, Al 'Lash' LaRue or Whip Wilson. A couple of 'Wild Bill' Elliott's are included, as the stories and excecutions were a grade above the others, much as Carrow's burgers outshine McDonald's.

These actors as protagonists make almost any Western worth seeing: John Wayne, Gary Cooper, James Stewart, Gregory Peck, Randolph Scott, Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Henry Fonda, William Holden, Charlton Heston, Robert Ryan, Audie Murphy and Clint Eastwood.

In the recent years of this llist, a number of Westerns shown only on TV and released on video are named, as very few theatrical Westerns are made today and some of the 'made-for-TV' are actually better than some that saw carbon arc projection. Although Western TV series from the 50s and early 60s were no different from the cowboy series of the 30s and 40s, a couple in recent years have provided unique entertainment. I've seen only a few Westerns of recent years--none after 1996; however, in the interest of being comprehensive, I've accepted recommendations by others for inclusion and exclusion. It appears, though, that the Western in recent years has ventured into some very weird territory.

Josey Wales should be on the list. Filled with classic scenes and dialog.

"Dyin' ain't much of a livin', boy."

"To hell with them boys. Buzzards gotta eat, same as worms."

Darryl Machum

The Outlaw Josey Wales isn't a great movie? You must be kidding, many, including Eastwood believe it is as good of better than Unforgiven; in fact, I would call it one of the greatest films ever made. And, by the way, Lee Van Cleef isn't in Once Upon a Time in the West so you don't have to worry about seing a close up of him.

Bella

One of my favorites is "The Missouri Breaks". A crossdressing Marlon Brando shooting a Creedmore is pretty out there (not to say old Marlon in a sunbonnet is any kind of pretty). I can't remember the hero's name but that line "the sound you are hearing is the sound of your throat being cut..." is memorable for any film.

How about "Silverado"? It has beautiful high-country scenery, the best musical score for a western movie I've ever heard, wonderful riding scenes, a good plot, and interesting and varied rifles and pistols. Also, the film dives deeply into issues of honor and betrayal, friendship and loyalty, love and loss, and more. It's my No. 1 best western movie pick at this point in my life.
