Why the NRA Should Try Being Reasonable

... Give Up Asking for Money, Ect.

I am indebted to a Mr. Bill Heavey of Virginia for putting me on to an editorial that ran in The Washington Post on Sunday, Dec. 16th. It's titled "The NRA's Main Target? Its Members' Checkbooks," and is written by one Richard Feldman, who worked as a representative for the NRA from 1984 until 1997.

Mr. Feldman makes two points:

First: "In the NRA's lexicon, 'compromise' is a dirty word, code for gun owners surrendering their rights while getting nothing in return from gun-control advocates."

Second: "…the NRA itself…has become intoxicated with money and privilege. The leadership has lost sight of its mission. Safeguarding the rights of gun owners has become secondary to keeping the fundraising machinery well greased and the group's senior staff well compensated."

Mr. Feldman claims that Wayne LaPierre, the NRA's Executive Vice President, "…pocketed about $950,000 in 2005," and that NRA headquarters' parking lot is "filled with shiny new BMWs and Mercedez-Benzes.

Let's start with point one. If someone mentions compromise, the next phrase out of their mouths is usually "reasonable gun controls." I assure you that the measures Sarah Brady and Barbara Boxer and Chuck Schumer consider reasonable are quite different from what you consider reasonable.

People in the gun-control biz know nothing about guns, hate guns, and harbor a profound fear and mistrust of people who own them. It goes far, far beyond public policy; it is visceral. I cordially invite Mr. Feldman to achieve a meaningful compromise with this bunch, and I advise him to bring lunch because he's going to need it.

About point two: Wonder why Mr. Feldman quoted LaPierre's income for 2005, and not 04 or 06 or 07? It's because an NRA executive incentive plan paid off in that year and one time only, LaPierre did make $950,000. In any other year he makes far, far less, and in fact is paid a lot lower than many heads of other special-interest groups in Washington.

But I would not care much if Wayne LaPierre did pull down nearly a million every year or if the NRA parking lot teemed with Bugattis and Bentleys. Washington runs on money, and every special interest group pays people to keep the gutless twerps in Congress in a state of constant fear. Those who do this successfully are awarded very large sums of money--because they are worth it.

As long as Mr. La Pierre and company remain as terrifying as the Black Death they merit whatever they earn. If they keep Chuck Schumer well supplied with stomach acid they can have my contribution any time.

Amen Yooper. Yohan, socialists take from you for the common good. Free men such as ourselves give for the common good. That's your flaw in us banding together to fight the gun grabbers, no one is forcing us to do it. This of course you may not understand as you have stated before you are on another plane...Aeroflot? Those 870's are $199 here and have been for a while. Hell six years ago they were $219. Must be that runaway inflation.

Oops, didn't proofread my last. Meant to say GWB may not be the cat's meow....
Can't believe anyone would want to see Klintonista II
McCain is going to be up by me on Saturday, might try to go see him. Ron Paul pretty much blew it with the Lincoln comments. Coming down to the wire here, Huckabee or McCain in my book. Not exactly on my same ideals but lots closer than Chamelion Romney or Rudy's big government crap.

You're about as committed as I am!
I did send a small amount to McCain.
I don't agree with everything he does and says, but He's a war hero and I belierve him to be honest. What did Paul say RE Lincoln?

I'm an Endowment member of NRA and have been a life member since 1972. The 2nd Amendment is NOT about hunting and habitat even though there is an indirect link (unless you're a bow hunter). The right of self defense from bad people and bad governments is a basic HUMAN right. If the means of defense is taken away then the right is effectively taken away (look at the British). NRA is far from perfect but who else really does what they do? They also support and advocate many kinds of shooting sports of which I'm a participant. To those who whine about getting mail asking for funds, you do have a trash can don't you? Whenever you get a solicitation that somehow grabs you, send the folks some $$$. That's just the way it works. If anyone on this blog wants to lessen the need for an NRA, vote wisely when you are given the opportunity every two years.

Chev Jim

Folks, we have no choice but to support the NRA. We must hold our leaders accountable, but "teaching them a lesson" by withholding funds will only work to our own detriment. I'm not suggesting carte blanche, and I'm not saying they're always right--but they are the only bulwark we've got that is capable of stemming the tide. The NRA is our "seawall," if you will, against the "waves" of anti-gun hysteria and political attacks we suffer from time to time. Remove it, and we get inundated with ridiculous laws and regulations. Also, I would caution that we do not divide ourselves based on such political considerations as universal health care or immigration reform. Don't say another gun owner is wrong because he or she is for or against universal health care, or is for or against "amnesty" for illegal aliens. We also don't want ANY political party to think it has a "lock" on our vote, lest it take us for granted. Remember when Bush said he'd sign a new "assault weapons ban" if Congress passed it? Does that sound like he was "dancing with the one who brought him?" If any political party thinks it has our votes automatically, we won't get our due consideration and respect from any of them. So far, no party has launched an outright attack upon us this campaign season--and that shows the power that we wield, the power that we have made them respect. We must make sure that we don't give our votes to anyone based upon lip service, but only upon demonstrated commitment to the preservation of our rights. If they want our votes, they've got to earn them!

I am a Life Member of the NRA and support them because they are our best hope of keeping our guns and the Second Amendment.

The NRA should be tough as hell when dealing with anti-gun politicans and anti-gun special interest groups. The anti-gunner's idea of "reasonable gun controls" is simply this; they will take half our guns now and the other half later. That is no choice at all and certainly no basis for being reasonable.

All the best...
Gil

dear dave,
i live in new jersey and it is a pain in the ass as it is to apply for a firearm's purchaser permit, but when you do go to buy your firearm that day , the retailer is REQUIRED to charge an instant background check that day!! they also have the nerve to make you show id for the purchase of ANY ammo for that gun. don't you think the NRA should do something about that? I have been a member now for approx 3 years and it bothers me that as soon as i signed up they were immediately asking for $100 donations to battle/protect our second ammendment rights.

Lonnie

As for an alternative group that stands for the Second Amendment, that is easy. Gun Owners of America. I think we all need to see the fresh gun grab law that your beloved NRA helped to write.

If it is used to the extent it was written a lot of veterans will lose their right to possess a weapon. The meer treatment for PTSD is justification to have their gun ownership rights removed. And as for the thought that they can appeal, well if they are willing to foot the bill, they can. The POS Chuck Shumer has refuse to fund the bill from the previous Bill Clinton gun grab.

My honest opinion is we need to throw every career politician out of office in the next election. I also think any bill that changes or modifies the intent of the founding fathers of any of the bill of rights in the original constitution should be voted on by the citizens of the country. Not allowed to be hidden in the dark and passed by a subversive group of nanny staters.

joel

how much would a box of ammo cost?assuming you could even buy it,if it weren't for the NRA.I send em my 25$ every year

Troy S.

The fact that the article appeared in the Washington Post was enough to give me pause before reading the crux of Mr. Heavy's letter...talk about liberal rags-ugh!

I agree with EVERYTHING Petzal wrote...keep the pressure on the libs at whatever cost it takes. If that means we pay LaPierre several hundred thousand dollars a year, then so-damn-be-it. He's worth every penny, then and now!

How many lobbyists do you know who keep the same job past 5 years?

Answer: (none)

LaPierre is a pioneer when it comes to organizational loyalty

As for the NRA, tell me what they have done to improve gun ownership. Also, to the guy praising GWB (little one), What happened to the balanced Budget he inhereted in 2001? enough said. Now look at our budget. Your great grandkids will never live to pay his debt. Kinda odd, I did well from 92 thru 2000, then all went to Hell in a handbasket and is still there. Maybe come Jan. 20 2009, if I live that long, someone will save our A--. We all thought Pappa George was a idiot, but turns out he was smart as they come. Do believe little G took after his MOM, run your mouth so no one else can speak. Come on Hillay, be nice to have 2 Clintons running the Country again. Now thats what we call experience of the best order. Little G will invade Turkey if he can after todays killing. How he's survied, we will never understand. But with the Supreme court in his pocket, he was protected well. O well, to see him fly back to Texas for good.

Dr. Ralph

RMH, if Hillary is elected our country will have been run by a total of two families since 1988... give her two terms and that's a lot like 30 years! We might as well be a dictatorship. If you want change, vote for the only person on earth who can give it to us. RON PAUL

YooperJack

Hopefully you can enlighten me! You refer to the deficit. As I understand it, tax revenues are coming in at record numbers because 1) More people are working and paying taxes, 2) Corporations are making record profits and paying taxes, and 3) Less people are on public assistance. Yet, all of the Democrats running for GWB's job are complaining about this deficit. I know that there is a tremendous shorfall in both Social Security and Medicaid, but that's actually a different issue because they are covered by their own tax and, theoretically, have their own accounts. That should have no bearing on the annual budget.
I also suspect that 9/11, the war in Afganistan, the war in Iraq and the funding for a new
Homeland Security Department might have had some affect on the deficit. However, if Mrs. BJ Clinton can show us how she would fund both of the wars, HSD and the cost of 9/11 without dipping into the National Treasury, I might even vote for her (if they do video of her shooting something).

Clay Cooper

Mr. Wayne LaPierre reminds me of President Theodore Roosevelt, walk softly and carry a really big stick!

SilverArrow

Clay
Not sure you can quite put Wayne LaPierre into the same league with Teddy Roosevelt.

Yooper
Hillary making a rat-a-tat video; yech! Disgusting thought!

RMH
Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but please get your facts straight.

Dr. Ralph

I thought a video of Hillary shooting something was a good idea until this morning when Dave mentioned topless girls shooting machine guns on video... now the whole thing is just ruined for me. What a horrible mental picture.

All you nra sheep need to learn to look at things ojectivelly and they havent held up there end along with all the other so called pr 2nd amendment organazations in gw's fist term they all should have joined foreces and accually got the 2nd amendment reinstated ; thats why we support wichever one we individually chose but that opertunity has come and gone and yet they're still making the same promiseses they where before ; my objective veiwtells me there all in it for the money and not us or acheveing what is always promissed IT'S UP TO US TO WALK ON WASHINGTON AND DEMAND THAT THE 2ND AMENDMET BE REINSTATED AND A AMENMENT BE PASSED THAT CLEARLY STATES NO LAWS OR BILLS OR AMENDMENTS AGAINST THE 2ND AMENDM

coachike

yooper jack,
i take it that you are GWB fan, well i'm not. the man has trouble tying his own shoes let alone coming up with a complete sentence on camera. yet the man has the balls to come up with "no child left behind" bill. what this now means is that kids in school, no matter how big of a dirtbag for lack of a better word they are now have to graduate. so what he is he saying? you can fail and still have a promising career! GWB was a "C" student at best and now that moron is running, i mean ruining the country not to mention our economy. i am certainly not a hillary fan by far, this country will never ever let a woman be president. maybe guliani could be the answer, i don't know, but the nra needs to do something soon, because your boy bush doesnot care one way or the other, he has made enough money over the last 8 years so that his grandkids could pay off this debt!

NRA sheep? Move to Australia. As to GW, many of us supported him, including Congress and Senate when the war started. We thought we were looking at WMD's. How long was GW in office when the Sh!t hit the fan. Could any of you do better? After 9-11, we had the stock market close, huge losses, I sent the wife out immediatley to fuel up the cars, had her pull some cash out of the bank, locked and loaded to protect my family if it came to that. We all looked up in the sky and for many of us, the first time in our lives we didn't see jet contrails in the sky. How, after all that, do the antigun bastards even have the balls to challenge the 2A rights that we have?! People always ask me after I show them a new firearm that I bought, "how many guns do you need?" I tell them back that although I may not need them, I have the RIGHT to have them. The NRA helps keep that right. I firmly believe that my rights to protect myself and my family, greatly outweigh who is going to GIVE me free healthcare, free retirement, free, this, free that. NRA sheep! KMA, that stands for kiss my ass! Mr Joe Anderson, Tell me the next time you are going to march on Wash. give me a months notice so I can take the time off, see, I run a business that supports my family including healthcare and stuff. We all stick together on the 2A and we will do fine. I say, start w/ the basics. For the record, I was more for throwing all those troops going to Afganistan and finding and killing Bin Laden, but we are stuck w/ it now, so let's get it done, pull out when we can and let all those crazy sons-of-bitches kill each other off, so the UN can beat us up again. I jumped into Panama w/ the 82nd Airborne when I had to and got a purple heart for my troubles. I saw through 6 years in the military that these people dont hold life as sacred as we do. It's sad. But I won't let it happen to my family, and that way is to start w/ the basic "RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS". ANY polotition who doesn't make that REAL clear will not get my vote. It's so sad, we are supposed to be self governed. Shit, call 911-I think they are now calling it Dial-A-Prayer. I can't believe we have to pay a congress and senate (who get a pay raise every year, unless they vote against it yuk, yuk) and keep the same salary and health care until the day they die, doesn't do what they are supposed to do. They are supposed to serve us! We serve them. Where is R. Reagon, or someone like him when we need him? Sorry about the rant, I just think that we need to take back our control of the gov't instead of the other way around. Tomorrow is the 2nd to last day of muzzleloader in Ohio, and I'm going. Maybee that will settle me down a bit. Johan, you spelling still stinks! Coop, tell me my TC barrel I just ordered in 25-06 will be accurate. United we stand. Divided, We are done

Sorry, what also is sad is tha I didn't spell Reagan right. So much for my credibility!

As for the defecite,Bushie Boy gets credit for that. You can blame anyone you please, but it occured under his watch.( prior to 911, his list of questions and answers for the day were beside his plate for him to read) Sure, most rich dudes made lots of $$$ under BUSHIE Boy, but the hard working guy is looking for a a job. Thank god, Bush only has one year to go, and any of the people running can do a better job than he has. Bush is like the NRA, take our $$$$ and spend as you want. Hopefully he will take Wayne back to Crawford with him as his body guard.Or Stable Boy, O' can Bush ride a Horse? He sure knows how to ride the fence.

Mock1

RMH
How do you think all those "rich dudes" got rich? Are you saying they aren't hard working? Do you think you should be rich if you are a hard working 9-5 mon-fri? Most hard working guys, and girls I know, have jobs, it's because they have a rep for being "hard working" Maybe you want to vote for Clinton because she can do a better job? I remember when we got a big democrat congress and how they were going to "make things right" They have, what, the lowest 23% rating in the history of congress? Yeah, I'm sure that's GW's fault too, because he has a whopping 25% approval rating. Great mandate. People have lost faith in their govt. Period. Gee, I wonder why, since one man "the Pres" has so much control over the whole country. I learned in school about this thing called checks and balances. It should be called who gives a shit, pay me, let me stay in a mansion, give me my salary and health care until I die. Yes, you may be right, one man caused all this misery
