Fish Vet: Funny Or Stupid?

From KUSA 9News Denver:

A squirming fish is hauled out of a fish pond, anesthetized and put through a physical examination. X-rays are taken of the fish and it's given an ultrasound. As odd as it sounds, a fish owner who has paid $5,000 to $10,000 for a prized Japanese Koi may find that special medical care for a fish is well worth the cost.

Okay, I'm all about all living creatures being equal in stature, but... what!? $5,000 to $10,000 dollars to have your fish operated on? Will your fish fetch your paper or birds? Will your fish snuggle up and keep you warm at night? This is nuts!

I don't know about you folks, but I would never, ever pay anything to keep my "pet" fish alive. I say fire up the grill and let's see what Koi tastes like.

Has anyone ever taken their fish to the vet?

The only piscatorial medical knowledge one needs in regard to an ailing pet fish is a knack for estimating how many flushes it will take to send little Nemo down the toilet...

stupid...and a little funny...

Dude - the vet thing is a little offside for sure, but think about this.

A flyfisherman will pay tens of thousands to fly to the other side of the world, with rods, reels and waders that cost thousands more, just to rip the lips of fish he would never dream of letting die - happy to return with only a much thinner wallet and a bunch of blurry, cheesy photos of himself holding those fish (that he no doubt held tenderly, stroked, cooed about, gazed lovingly at, and then carefully released). He will also consider every penny of that to have been really well spent.

Funny? or stupid?

A neighbor's fish were slowly disappearing from her koi pond. She couldn't figure out what was happening. One day a shadow went over my lawn. A great blue heron sailed into her yard, stepped into the fishpond, stuck it's bill into the water, and got a free, but very expensive, lunch. Had to laugh. Glad she didn't see it, or she might have shot it. Not sure which would have been more costly, vet bills or fines for killing a protected species.

Honestly, I know people that love their indoor aquarium fish enough to pay for a vet ... why not their even more expensive koi? I, personally, have a hard time justifying $1,000 vet bills for dogs and cats. I know others wouldn't hesitate with "worthless" mutts ... especially if their kids have a say. And for a very expensive breeder field dog?

wow i heard that carp actually arent that bad tasting

Being a fish vet isn't a bad career choice, if you could work in fish hatcheries and salmon hatcheries for food. Being in demand with so few others competing for jobs with you means you can set your own price!
