Speaking Of A Road Trip...

Bigbox_4

I'm going on an 18 day road trip for the big book, aka Field and Stream Magazine. That's right 18 days, whew... I'll be taking pictures and shooting video all the way from Minneapolis to New Orleans following the big muddy. As a friend put it "I'll be Huck-Finning it down the mighty Missisip". I think we're pretty much fishing for anything that swims with a pretty hardy lean towards bass. Now, I was told that this wasn't going to be a "fly fishing" trip by my editor. In fact he said don't even bother bringing a fly rod. I guess I shouldn't tell him about the five rods, mondo box of flies - courtesy of Umpqua - and the serious overweight fee I just paid at the United counter for my gigantic bag.

I gotta hand it to you full-time water-frothers: you're dedicated. Flyfishing the Mississippi...
I'd try for a big flathead on a fly rod. I'm no great shakes as a fly angler, but I have caught a few of those predatory suckers using grasshopper patterns.
'Course that was in a local river you could wade across, not one of the largest rivers in the world.
Sounds like fun, anyway.

You go lay some of that smack-down on them fish with those flies, Tim. Tell us all the wicked details.

Alex Pernice the fly rod winner

Really, id love to accept remains of the flys. Those are all patterns i use or that would work for smallmouth bass and carp.

Holy cow! That's not a fly box...that's a suitcase! Sounds like a great trip. Have fun, be careful and take lots of pictures!

Remember to throw the Sneaky Pete flies in the lower left of the photo. I love fly fishing for bass and the Sneaky Pete has been my go-to fly. Good luck and wish I was there.

Where does one get a fly box that big. I can't seem to find a reasonable box that can hold my warmwater arsenal, and the plano box just doesn't display a grip of extended body leeches like a flybox does.
