Clear Fly Line

As usual, my MidCurrent newsletter has something thought provoking and insightful about a piece of gear I wrote off a long time ago, clear fly lines. To be perfectly honest I have no idea why more people don't use them. They make perfect sense, right? It does depends on who you ask though... I've been in situations where saltwater guides hate them as they have no idea where their client's fly is when it hits the water and others who love that fish can't see them. Take the time and read Paul Bruun's piece via MidCurrent today on the ins and outs of clear fly lines and the history that might have given them the bad rap.

Show Me The Money

The Teva Mountain Games, taking place in Vail, Colo., June 5 – 8, is looking for top fly anglers to compete in the Costa Del Mar Fly Fishing Competition. The competition is open to the first 50 anglers who register at www.tevamountaingames.com, and the entry fee is $25 per person.

The competition will test for distance, accuracy and skill. During the finals, anglers will only be allowed to use one fly pattern. The angler with the most total points at the end of the competition will win the cash purse prize of $2,250.

Go get' em, ffloggers.

(Here's a hint ... that water's going to be rippin'... plan accordingly, and make us proud.)

How Montana Should Be Fished

Our buddy Joe Cermele of Field & Stream just offered up this great photo essay on fieldandstream.com. Go check it out; some of you might recognize the stops he and his friend Mark Wizeman made. (You can also see the full story in the June issue of F&S.)

We like the clever "33 Rules of the Trout Fishing Road." But what we really like, Joe, is the way you got after it. That's how Montana should be fished. Road trip. Down 'n dirty. Granola bars and beer. Cheap hotels and bars. Big fish, snakes, and dusty roads. Is there any more important rite of passage for the bona fide trout bum than a road trip through Montana, the right way?

Well done, Joe. Not only do we like how you write/shoot ... we like how you roll.

Top Ten Fishing Spots in the World?

Granted I found this list on the Guardian UK website, and it's a bit (very) slanted to a Brit's taste.

Come on! Not a single mention of the US and only a couple of trout spots in the southern hemisphere... What gives? I think this list is a bunch of garbage, barring New Zealand of course. Check out the link and tell me what you think. Where would your top ten spots be?

Snagging Snap Shots

Seems as some of you think I snagged that last fish... Granted we've already had the snagging debate, but what I want to know is how many of you have posed for a picture with a snagged fish?

I'll admit I've taken a few...of other people that is. There's been a few I'm not proud of, but when your getting paid to shoot fishing photography sometimes you take what the fish gods will give you. So yes, I'm not proud of it, but I have. What about you? How many of you have photos on the wall of snagged fish? A better question is does it matter?

APB: Romano Can Fish!

I promised you all a more difficult quiz today. Here it is ... how on earth did Tim Romano manage to catch this fish? Nah, I'll tell you ... it ate a red zebra midge in that almost-runoff stage, in very shallow water. After a very difficult up-wind cast. On 5X tippet. All we need are congrats to Tim now, the quiz is postponed until Monday.

Note: Photo by Duncan Coker. Tim, the photographer on the Field & Stream magazine feature job yesterday, was apparently to busy fishing. Go figure.

The Line Winner ...

Is Steve C., with the first answer out of the box, though a lot of those answers are theoretically correct. The reason Steve wins is that's a real-life experience from the Arkansas River not long ago. His answer is exactly what happened. The wind played a big role in that.

Tell you what, we'll have a rematch with another prize tomorrow ... but I need to think up a harder question. Steve, E-mail [email protected],com, and we'll get that line sent.

Permit Party

I watched them for at least an hour... probably longer. Dozens of permit. Schooling, swimming back and forth, arrogantly cruising, snubbing their noses at my offering.

Granted I was with Brian Hodges of thisisfly.com staring through four inches of glass waving what was left of my breakfast trying to convince thirty pound permit to come just a bit closer. They were not having it. That's what permit do - ignore you.

This was as close as I've ever been to landing a permit. Not very, I'm afraid.

I'm all for Deeter going deep in the name of permit research (see previous post). Probably one of, if not the most sought after fish on a fly.

Deeter if you take me up on this objective I wish you luck. Start now and we might see you again in 2010. Do me a favor if you will... While your down there studying those wily fish, give ole' mr. permit the big middle finger from me and ask him why he refuses to eat my fly.

I'm going back under ... the surface of the trout river, that is. As I did before in this Feb. '07 Field & Stream feature.

Monday Afternoon Fishing Cartoons

It's monday afternoon and I thought we could all use a little break from Deeter's super "serious" questions about fishing with ipods, hard working guides, etc... I found this rough sketch of a cartoon while surfing youtube for all things fishy and found it to be quite therapeutic for the monday afternoon blahs.
