Discussion Topic: F&S Magazine vs. F&S Online
Some months ago, a friend called after a storm. I answered, “Hello.”
“Is your phone working?” he asked.
“Ahh . . . yeah,” I said, thinking that the pause might be time enough for him to realize that we wouldn’t be having the discussion otherwise.
But that didn’t slow him down at bit.
“Mine isn’t,” he concluded.
So, I won’t ask you if you get your outdoor media online. Obviously you do. The question is, how much and is it your preferred source?
From a Southwick Associates press release:
In the 2008 media preference surveys from AnglerSurvey.com and HunterSurvey.com, approximately 34% of anglers stated that Web sites are their primary source of fishing information and entertainment, compared with about 24% in 2007—an increase of 10%. The results for hunters remained static, with about 26% reporting in 2007, and again in 2008, that the Internet is their preferred media source.
Despite the increase in anglers’ Internet use and the fact that more than one-fourth of hunters use the Internet as their primary source of information about their sport, both these groups turn to magazines as their preferred media. In the 2008 survey, about 39% of anglers indicated that magazines are their primary source of fishing information. The 2008 magazine figure for hunters was approximately 47%.
We know you go online for outdoor info and entertainment. But is it your primary source? Is it your preferred source? Do you spend more time with Field & Stream magazine or at F&S Online?

The magazine. I just get on F&S online for the blogs and the outdoors news, and every now and again an interesting story. The magazine has Petzal's monthly article, along with Philip B. (not even going to try to spell his last name) and also Bill Heavey. Mr. Heavey's article is a riot and is the first thing I flip to every month.

I still get the hard-copy mags, but I was one of those in the Southwick survey who put that most of my outdoor info comes from the web.
Let's face it, with a lead time of months or more, by the time something hits the magazine, it's definitely not news any more. Regulation changes, new technology, and breaking news all happen while the hard-copy mags are still printing up the results from last year's deer season.
Not to mention the cost of web-based information versus the cost of magazine subscriptions...

To be honest it is alot harder to read from the computer in the bathroom. That is why my subcription is always renewed.

I spend too much time with both - but I enjoy every word. I probably divide equal amounts of time between FSODT and FSOnline.
BTW - big booyah to Petzal and Heavey for this month's articles on accuracy and deer biology. You guys make me smarter everyday. Thanks.

I get both. The varied content supplements each other. Both outstanding!

I prefer the magazine but am very dissappointed how often what I read online is the substance of the next magazine. The only reason I continue to suscribe is because of David Petzal's article's that don't appear here!

The magazine. I guess I'm getting old, but I still enjoy some peace and solitude reading a book or a magazine. I'll check the site every now and again for something quick, and the blogs can be fun, but I cannot stand the world's continuing dependence on gadgets.
