Discussion Topic: Edwards Proposes “Hunting and Fishing Bill of Rights”

Yesterday, with support from the 350-member Iowa Sportsmen and Sportswomen for Edwards Committee, Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards proposed a federal "Hunting and Fishing Bill of Rights and Responsibilities” he says is designed to improve access, protect gun ownership, preserve clean water for fishing, secure our public-land national heritage, and empower citizens to be better stewards.

From IowaPolitics.com:

“Growing up in small, rural towns, I learned early that America has been blessed with a wealth of natural resources,” said Edwards. “Just as it is our right to enjoy America’s forests, mountains, fields and streams, it is also our responsibility to protect them for generations to come. But the Bush Administration has waged war on the environment, putting corporate interests ahead of our natural heritage at every turn. It’s time to reverse this destruction and renew our commitment to protecting our natural treasures.”

Charles Schumer refers to this man as the most liberal or to the left of any of the presidential wanna-be's and we should trust anything he says as to being pro-2nd amendment? Sure, and Hillary is equally pro-gun. Uh-huh, sure.......

Sounds like outdoorsmen have a candidate

jstreet

It reads well, but I admit to being cynical when it comes to candidates that promise the moon and the stars and deliver nothing.

That and the fact he's in third place behind Hitlery and Obama bin laden, makes me think edward's is just trying to pull votes from wherever he can.

Trust is a hard thing to invest in a politician.

andrew

He was one of the people pushing lawsuits against gun makers for inner city violence. "Iowa Sportsmen and Sportswomen for Edwards Committee" must be the smallest group on the planet. Same guy is after the PETA vote!

Maine Wildcat

I have to say that its gotta be the earliest that a Democrat running for President was willing to talk about issues important to Sportsman. He's never going to be perfect on guns --hell he's a Democrat!

But at least he willing to say that these issues will be a priority for him.

One other thing -- at least he's not pretending to be something he isn't like a certain "goose hunter"

Nathan R

He's a joke. And for the record,
he had a no vote on the "Firearms manuf. protection bill", he voted yes on the "gun show regulation amendment" and for good measure, even though it doesn't pertain to this topic, he voted no on the "flag desecration ammendment".

jack

He is pandering - plain and simple.

Read between the lines. Nearly everything he proposes requires an expansion (read intrusion) of government and increase in fees and taxes.

He wants to give more power to Agriculture and EPA. They don't need more power - they need to get off our backs.

It sounds warm and fuzzy - but I seriously doubt its advantages.

Brucie Boy

Oh for cryin' out loud...how could any sportsman or women support this pandering goofball? He'd be willing to wash your ass and drink the bathwater if you'd vote for him. Come on people, you can't seriously believe this guy is for real. It's going to come down to Clinton and Obama and Clinton's gonna win the nomination. God help us all.

Matt Mallery

Republicans are good for our gun rights (except Rudy and McCain) and Democrats are good for the environment we hunt in...we can't win.

ZACK

asking a Dem to look out for your gun rights is like asking Bill Clinton to take your daughter to prom. Either way someone is getting screwed!

Gary

Well you guys can call me a moron, a commie, and any other foul things you like, but Edward's proposal has several points that I agree with.

The proposal states that he will preserve our roadless backcountry, involve sportsmen in management decisions, and at least stop and consider the impact of high fence operations and commercial game farms.

But I guess since he is a filthy commie Democrat there is no way he could be sincere about any of these proposals.

I don't recall the current resident of the Oval Office every making any such promises. I guess he was too busy trying to figure out whether Weatherby had given him a 243 or a 248 (which I am sure most of you are award doesn't exist).

nick

the only thin g that sounds good about PETA is when u change the words

People
eating
tastie
animals

THATS THE HUNTER PETA

U WANNA KNOW WHY THE DEMS ANIMAL IS A DONKEY CAUSE THERE ALL JACKASS!!!!!!!!!LOL

Gary,

Believeing what this clown says is like believing the tooth ferry exists. For Edwards to pretend that he can relate to middle America and outdoorsmen is a joke. To Edwards this issue is "important" to him because it gives him one more excuse to hike taxes and have more control over our lives. He made his fortune robbing blind hospitals and insurance companies with juries as gulliable as you.
What he says and what he does are two different things. As Brucie Boy said, he'd be willing to drink your dirty bath water if it meant he got your vote. But please, I beg you, waste your vote on the dummy...a vote for him is one less for the shemale.

Hey Mallery, you said Reps are good for our gun rights, and Dems are good for our wilderness. I disagree with the second part. What people like Edwards really want is to shut everyone out of any area even remotely resembling a wilderness, in order to ensure that it is untouched and "preserved." More like inaccessable and off limits to any and all human activity.

No, Sportsmen have not found a candidate any more than the alchemists of old found the Philosopher's Stone. To say that he would be a good candidate for sportsmen would be like asking him to "preserve" our outdoor-recreational areas, and permitting him to confiscate our means of recreating in the way we choose: our guns.

So I will say that if we are smart, we sportsmen will not vote for some dumbass like Edwards, because he is a liar, especially when he promises to protect gun-owners' rights and to protect and enhance our hunting opportunities.

Have to agree with most of you.First Ill say I lean to the right heavily. This freakin guy sounds like a desperate drowning man. Oh yeah if Billiary wins I havent decided on Canada or Mexico?

Ronald

C'mon. Half of you guys are just ridiculous. You say we can't trust any Democrat because they are all liars and morons. Meanwhile, I can't think of two words that better describe the current Republican president, whom I voted for in his first term. Look. You can't discount any politician because he is a liar. They are all liars.
Most dems will hurt us on guns and most reps will hurt our environment. Why don't you put away your blind party allegiances and try to split the difference: Let's back dems that have good records on guns (and I'm not saying that is necessary Edwards) as well as reps that have good records on the environment. Let's identify these politicians on a local and national level and throw all our support behind them no matter what their party. Then maybe we could stop bickering.

mike

While it is exciting to see hunting and fishing seeming to be of major interest to a national polititian and especially a Democrat;

There is a heck of a lot of room "between the lines" in this press release that could very easily be filled in by non hunting and anti hunting use groups.

Also;

I believe you can look back and find similar rhetoric in years past in England, Canada and Australia; "protecting hunting heritage and citizens with good gun legislation". First crack out the box there was a move to ban everything but ancient shotguns.

Mike O

Evan!

"Obama bin laden" What are you, in kindergarten?

I think this is ridiculous. Yes, it is so important to protect the habitat for generations to come, but, in reality what Edwards is saying is let's just protect habitat. He's not concerned in protecting hunter's rights, or gunowners rights, He is protecting a "green peace" perspective. It sounds great, but the day that he advocates "life" of all things...including unborn children, then we can surely trust him with our best interests. What good is there to have a habitat to go to, but nobody to share it with?

This jack leg was a senator for NC and I don't remember him doing anything good for us except raise the cost of health care when he was an ambulance chaser. I say Fred in '08 is the way to go.

What good is preserving our natural resources, if no one is allowed to set foot in our wilderness areas, even for simple purpose of enjoying them?
What good does voting a "green-peace," environmetal radical to office do for the environment? Sure, it may limit human impact on wilderness areas...to the point of there being no human involvement or interaction at all.

I personally would much rather be assured that I will be allowed to legally keep my guns, and have the citizens of the private sector, rather than some governmental beauracracy, work to preserve the natural resources that we use for recreation.
And I believe that the private sector, if given the right incentives and motivations can probably do a better job of managing our natural resources than the government.
