Dumb Bass

"There is no dumber fish on earth than a yearling bass."

I didn't say it. My dear friend, Charlie Meyers, outdoors editor for the Denver Post did. Got me scratching my head and wondering about which fish are indeed the dumbest in the world. Hatchery-raised trout must be up there ... blitzing stripers would probably eat a Coke bottle if you threw it in the right spot ... bluegills are pretty easy ... and you can talk about your wild cutthroats all you want; those that haven't seen a fly are suckers for just about anything. Having seen a mako shark get stuck three times with the same fly, and then come back to eat it again, had me consider putting makos on the list. But then I decided they were just bad-ass.

What do you think? What fish is the "anti-permit?" The more I kick it around, the more I agree with Charlie. Sorry bass nation. But those young bucketmouths are just plain stupid. Not 'ol mama bass. The young ones. Say "dumb bass" fast enough, and it all makes sense...

I agree, but as you point out it is generally the younger fish that fall victim, so it becomes an issue of naivety/inexperience right?

I don't know but the fish that are big and have multiple piercings hanging from their lips are probably the least likely to bite again. But if the fish has received a Fly and Lure Diploma From Catch and Release University and he still gets caught, well then my hats off to the angler! And that fish is now the Dumb Fish
JMAL.

It's mostly a matter of how much pressure the fish have recieved. I recently fished a pond that no one had fished in about 7 years. There had been an algeal bloom and we assumed that most of the fish were dead. Well, not by a long shot. I caught about 40 bream in two hours on a Johnson Beetle spin. Oh yeah, my biggest one was over a pound! And that's not to mention the 10 lb. bass, my biggest ever and on ultralight tackle and 4lb. line.

However, bluegill can get tough if they get caught a couple of times. Same for bass, and really anything else. Bluefish would have to be my numero uno. Were talking about a fish that will hit a jig head with nothing on it; over and over and over.

I think saltwater mackerel are VERY stupid.
I cough 4 at once on the same jig when i was trolling.

When Bass are agressive, with the right weather conditions, they can seem stupid. However try bass fishing after a major cold front and they will seem nearly uncatchable.

kirk, i know you're trying to get people to post and start controversy for the benefit of 'hits' and 'visits' to your website, that's what pays your bills. but any fish bioligist will tell you that bass are way further up the evolutionary scale than a trout.

while it may seem a bass is 'stupid' because it's aggressive WHEN IT WANTS TO FEED, trout are about the dumbest 'game' fish on the face of the planet. proof: that's why they need to be stocked all the time, because they keep getting poached out by CORN fishermen.

Joey! Dorp the corn thing its not funny any more
